Price of Revenge = $3/gallon
Gas prices in the Vegas valley (sorry for the redundancy to all my Spanish speaking readers) have hit the $3/gallon mark. Normally this would make me jump out of my seat shouting about OPEC, post-war 1950s America, the failure of city/urban/regional planners, the military-industrial complex, etc. but today I'm not going to go on that tirade.
Today, instead I am going to cheer these prices. I am going to laud them because, as one who has always championed being conservative of natural resources, I think all the gas guzzlers of the world are finally getting their dues. I welcome these prices (hell, push 'em higher!) because now the ridiculousness of owning a Hummer in Las Vegas will hit you where it hurts most: your pocket book. Our culture has for some time been getting high on gas fumes, its not a novel topic to speak on, so I'm glad to see those soccer moms in their Escaldaes and those wanna-be ballers in their Denalis having to pay the price to look a fool.
I feel bad for the people who still can't afford/don't want a car and have to wait in the 100+ degree heat for the CAT bus in Vegas, I know that they will probably be slapped with a fare increase due to the gas prices. As if having to stand in the desert sun for an over-crowded, slow and inconvenient form of transportation wasn't enough. A fare increase is downright criminal. There should be some incentive there, and if I trusted politicians to do their jobs I might hold out hope for the future that something would be put in place. But I'm not holding my breath.
In the mean time I laugh every time I see some over-sized auto with one passenger at the light. Keep on truckin', one gallon at a time.
